With over 900 extensions, applications, macros, skins, and plugins available, and a strong focus on extensibility, XWiki is one of the most flexible and versatile collaborative platforms out there. Moreover, App within Minutes allows even non-technical users to create their own extensions and continue collaborating efficiently. We know that different users can have very different needs; this is why XWiki supports full customization and total freedom when it comes to the method of hosting. Being developed with the help of a community of passionate developers, XWiki is always advancing, which ensures compatibility, strong security, and performant features.
OpenProject is the leading free and open-source project management software. Supporting classic, agile, and hybrid project management methodologies, OpenProject covers the entire project lifecycle with features for task management, timeline planning, agile boards, time and cost tracking, and team collaboration. The software is developed and maintained by an active international community through the OpenProject Foundation, established in 2012. With a public development process on the Community instance at community.openproject.org, everyone can participate by adding ideas, reporting bugs, and contributing code. OpenProject is available as a self-hosted Community Edition or as an Enterprise offering with professional support, and can be deployed on-premises or in the cloud while maintaining full data sovereignty.

Why do you want to be at FOSDEM?
XWiki has been a consistent presence at FOSDEM since 2009, and OpenProject has participated regularly over the years, including joint presentations about openDesk in 2024. For 2026, we're excited to share a stand together for the first time, reflecting our newly announced strategic partnership and shared commitment to open-source collaboration and digital sovereignty.
On July 2, 2025, XWiki and OpenProject announced a formal partnership to deliver a complete open-source alternative to Atlassian's Confluence and Jira. This partnership brings together two mature, independently developed projects with decades of combined experience into an integrated solution designed for organizations that value digital sovereignty, transparent development, and user freedom. The collaboration includes a technical integration roadmap, joint sales and support, and unified approaches to help organizations transition away from proprietary tools.
In our interconnected world, knowledge sharing and project management are essential, yet many organizations find themselves locked into proprietary tools that compromise data sovereignty and inflate costs. Both XWiki and OpenProject have become trusted alternatives in their respective spaces. XWiki has attracted over 500 organizations moving away from Confluence, while OpenProject serves teams across more than 100 countries. Both projects are core components of the openDesk ecosystem, the digital workplace initiative supporting European public administrations and organizations seeking sovereign, interoperable infrastructure.
Since FOSDEM 2025, both projects have made significant advances that we're eager to share with the community:
XWiki entered a new major development cycle with the 17.x series, starting with migration to Jakarta EE 9.1 for long-term compatibility with modern application servers like Tomcat 10+. We've introduced significant usability improvements: users with edit rights can now reorder navigation menus through drag and drop, panels can be hidden or toggled for cleaner workspaces, and the macro configuration experience in the WYSIWYG editor has been redesigned with clearer parameter ordering. Performance has been a focus, with faster Solr indexing, optimized icon rendering, and a smoother document tree. We've also continued progress toward full WCAG 2.2 AA compliance and released an experimental BlockNote-based WYSIWYG editor alongside work on Yjs-powered real-time collaboration endpoints. At the extension level, we launched the Cristal Integration extension and delivered a new version of the Change Request application with image previews and UI enhancements.
OpenProject has also seen major developments in 2025. The project continues its commitment to transparent, community-driven development with regular releases addressing user needs from the public roadmap. Recent versions have introduced project phases for lifecycle management, enhanced board functionalities, improved work package hierarchies, and better integration capabilities with tools like Nextcloud. The OpenProject Foundation continues to strengthen community participation through the Community instance, forums, and contribution guidelines that welcome developers, translators, testers, and documentation writers.
This partnership represents more than just two tools working together. It's about building a cohesive open-source ecosystem that respects user freedom and data sovereignty. By combining XWiki's structured knowledge management with OpenProject's comprehensive project tracking, we're creating a solution that can fully replace proprietary stacks while staying true to open-source principles.
