Explanation
The Panels Application fills the columns beside the page content with Panels, rectangular zones stacked one above the other. A wiki can show a column on the left, on the right, on both sides, or on neither.
Each Panel carries its own title and its own content, so one lists the pages of the wiki as a tree, another the pages you modified most recently, another the applications installed. The content is a wiki page like any other, which is why a Panel can hold anything a page can hold.
Which Panels appear, and in which column, is set by an administrator for the whole wiki or for a single page. What you decide for yourself is the shape of the columns: resize a Panel column to trade width between the Panels and the content, or hide a Panel column to give the content the full window. Both choices are stored in your browser and shared by every tab on that machine, so they follow you from page to page but not from one device to the next.
FAQ
Why does a Panel show something different on another page?
Several Panels describe the page being viewed, such as its child pages, its siblings or the pages linking to it, so their content changes as you navigate.
Why do I see no side column at all?
Either the administrator displays none on that page, or you collapsed it yourself. Hide a Panel Column shows how to bring it back.
Can a Panel be shown inside the content instead?
Yes, with the Display Panel Layout Macro, which renders a Panel where the macro is placed.
