Write a Page in Markdown

Steps

Write the content of a wiki page in Markdown instead of XWiki syntax, once an administrator has installed and enabled the Markdown syntax.

  1. Click "Create", enter the page title and click "Create".
  2. Select "CommonMark Markdown 1.2" in the "Page syntax" field of the editor, then click "No" in the "Syntax Conversion" dialog.

  3. Click "Source" in the editor toolbar and write the content in Markdown, using the Markdown 1.2 Syntax. For example:
    # Getting Started

    Welcome to the team space.

    * Read the [[onboarding guide|Sandbox.WebHome]]
    * Ask your questions in the chat

    {{info}}
    Meetings take place every Monday.
    {{/info}}

  4. Click "Save & View". The page displays the rendered content.

FAQ

Why does the editor offer to convert the content?

The "Syntax Conversion" dialog opens whenever the syntax of a page changes, even when the page has no content to convert yet (XWIKI-25039). On a new page, "No" only changes its syntax.

How do I import existing Markdown content?

Paste it in step 3, in the "Source" mode of a page whose syntax is "CommonMark Markdown 1.2".

Can I edit a Markdown page without writing Markdown?

Yes. Edit the page with the WYSIWYG editor as any other page, and the content is saved back as Markdown. Some constructs may be rewritten when doing so: see Markdown Limitations.
