Steps

Filters drop events that would otherwise reach you; Notification Filters describes each of them and how two filters on the same event are resolved.

Change the notification settings.
Switch the filters of the "System Filters" table on or off, according to what you want hidden.
Click "Add filter" under "Custom Filters" to write one of your own.
Select the locations the filter applies to, choose "Notify of the event" or "Ignore the event", then select the events and the channels concerned.
Click "Save".
Check that the filter is listed in the "Custom Filters" table, where you can sort, disable or delete it.

Because watching is itself a filter: a narrower filter on a location you watch puts its button in the "Custom" state.
