Explanation
Active Installs is provided by the Active Installs 2 API extension, bundled with the XWiki flavor. Once a day it sends an anonymous report, called a ping, from your instance to xwiki.org.
The XWiki open source project has no other way of counting the wikis that are running: without those pings it cannot tell whether usage is growing, shrinking or flat. Leaving them on is the simplest way to support the project, and knowing that the software is being used is what keeps its developers going.
