Explanation

An extension is an add-on installed into a running wiki with the Extension Manager, from the Extensions catalogue on xwiki.org. Installing one changes what the wiki can do, without touching the server it runs on.

An Application is the kind of extension made of wiki Pages: installing it adds Pages you can read, edit and extend like any others. The other kinds are code, and add a capability the wiki did not have, such as the Markdown Syntax or LDAP authentication, which bring no Pages to browse and show up only in what the wiki can suddenly do.
