Explanation
When installing or starting XWiki, most of what goes wrong is not in XWiki itself but in the environment it runs in: the servlet container, the network, or the Java runtime. This topic covers the symptoms that appear whatever installation method was used:
- a JMX domain conflict that stops the cache from starting, when several instances share one servlet container.
- connection refused exceptions in the log files, when XWiki sits behind a proxy server and cannot reach the extension repositories.
- a PKIX handshake failure when XWiki calls an HTTPS service, described in SSL Certificate Error.
- a "File path too long" error on Windows while unzipping the distribution.
The Admin Tools application checks the basic settings of a Tomcat and MySQL installation. Some of its tools only work on Linux.
