XWiki Directories

Explanation

XWiki writes its data into two directories that live outside the web application: a permanent directory, whose content has to survive a restart and an upgrade, and a temporary directory, whose content XWiki is free to throw away.

Neither of them is set in the wiki administration. The permanent directory comes from a Java system property or from xwiki/WEB-INF/xwiki.properties, and the temporary directory from the servlet container, so both belong to the installation of the instance rather than to its day-to-day administration.

FAQ

Which of the two can I empty?

The temporary one, and XWiki does it for you at every startup. In the permanent directory only the cache sub-directory is safe to remove, see Sub-Directories in the Permanent Directory.
